Call to Action
“It seems now more than ever that schooling can and should be designed to support young people of all identities and backgrounds as they self-actualize, realize their full potential and participate in a democratic society... [and that] schools today must focus relentlessly on the social-emotional, academic, and healthy identity development of every child” (PELP Note on Racial Equity in Schools, 2020).
Overview
The success of every student is dependent on the coordinated and focused efforts of school and district leaders. When disparate outcomes exist in school systems for some students, leaders must ask the difficult question, “Are we leading for equity? Have we created the systems to ensure success for every student?” In this interactive, practitioner-led symposium, participants will analyze their current context culturally, structurally, and systemically, to “accurately see the systems that produce their current results” (PELP Note on Racial Equity). They will assess the doorways and barriers in their system that are either supporting students or causing harm and widening opportunity gaps. Using an intentional racial equity lens, leaders will engage in rich dialogue, reflect on essential text, share promising practices, and plan for next steps as leaders for equity.
